Within just 15 days, the prices of various fruits in Madaripur have doubled, putting general consumers in a difficult situation. Traders claim that the price hike is due to supply shortages and increased transportation costs. However, consumers allege that dishonest traders are artificially inflating prices by creating a fake crisis.
Sudden Price Surge in the Fruit Market
A visit to different markets in Madaripur reveals that apple prices, which were previously between Tk 150-180 per kg, have now risen to Tk 300-350. A bunch of bananas that used to cost Tk 30-40 is now being sold for Tk 60-70. The price of oranges has jumped from Tk 250 to Tk 450. Even locally produced fruits like guavas and papayas have seen a sharp price increase.
Traders’ Explanation
Md. Rafiqul Islam, a trader from Madaripur’s Puratan Bazar, stated, “We are receiving fewer supplies because fruit production has decreased due to floods and heavy rains in different parts of the country. Additionally, the rising dollar exchange rate has affected imported fruits. Transportation costs have also increased, leaving us with no choice but to raise prices.”
Consumers' Complaints
However, local consumer Abdul Hamid expressed a different opinion. He said, “Every year before Ramadan and other festivals, traders increase fruit prices. This time, they are using the same tactic. Yet, the authorities are not monitoring the situation properly.”
Authorities' Response
The Assistant Director of the Madaripur District Consumer Rights Protection Department stated, “We are monitoring the market. If any dishonest trader is found creating an artificial crisis to raise prices, strict action will be taken against them.”
Public Demand
Consumers urge the government to take effective steps to control fruit prices. They especially demand increased surveillance from wholesale to retail markets to prevent price manipulation.
Experts believe that without proper government intervention and trader accountability, this unusual price hike cannot be stopped, which will further burden the common people.
